History of Lockhart Stadium

Lockhart Stadium was built in 1959 for high sports. In the early years, it was used for a variety of sports but was the most notable for association football games.

Lockhart used to be home to Fort Lauderdale High School, Stranahan High School, Northeast High School, and Dillard High School football teams. At that stadium, people had witness many thrilling football matches of state football championships.

In 1977, the Miami Toros, a team from the North American Soccer League (NASL), relocated to Lockhart Stadium and rebranded themselves as the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The Strikers played at Lockhart Stadium until 1982 when they decided to move to Minnesota.

Moving forward to 1998, Lockhart Stadium became the home of the Miami Fusion, a team from Major League Soccer (MLS). The Fusion played their matches at Lockhart Stadium until 2001, at which point the team disbanded.

Subsequently, from 2002 to 2010, Lockhart Stadium served as the home stadium for the Florida Atlantic Owls football team. The Owls later moved to FAU Stadium in 2011.

Lockhart Stadium was eventually demolished in 2019 to make way for the construction of the new Inter Miami CF Stadium, which opened in 2020.

Throughout its history, Lockhart Stadium played a significant role in the development of soccer in the United States. It hosted some of the most prominent teams in both the NASL and MLS, and numerous memorable matches took place on its grounds. Additionally, the stadium was a popular venue for high school and college football games.
